Have Always Wondered

Why does your eye twitch?
I think we all have had that moment (in front of others of course or just before that big presentation) when from out of nowhere one or both eyes start to twitch.

A twitch in your eye can be incredibly irritating and distracting. But luckily, eye twitch is usually not painful, and very rarely is it cause for concern. It’s basically an over stimulation of the eye muscles.

There are many ideas as to the origin (cause) of:
Alcohol intake

Bright light

Caffeine excess

Fatigue

Irritation of the eye surface or inner eyelids

Smoking

Stress

Wind

Vitamin B12 deficiency

Magnesium deficiency

Dehydration

Eye twitching usually goes away on its own within a few days or weeks with rest, stress relief and decreased caffeine.

Schedule an appointment with your doctor if:

  • The twitching doesn’t go away within a few weeks
  • Your eyelid completely closes with each twitch or you have difficulty opening the eye
  • Twitching happens in other parts of your face or body as well
  • Your eye is red, swollen or has discharge
  • Your eyelids are drooping
