Tart Cherry Juice

Tart cherry juice has become very popular.  There have been many claims to this fruit juice, some of which are; assistance with sleep, reduction of inflammation, strengthen the immune system.  Generally, tart cherries that are consumed are dried, frozen or juiced.   There are some tart cherry juices that contain quite a bit of sugar, so be sure to read the label!

Sleep Assistance:  Tart cherries are naturally rich in melatonin- which is a hormone responsible for sleepiness.  Tart cherries have also been found to have a good amount of tryptophan & anthocyanins!  These two compounds may help the body create melatonin and lengthen its effects.

Reduction of Inflammation:  Tart cherries in one study did show that the juice did reduce certain blood markers of inflammation, another study showed daily consumption participants experienced slightly less pain and stiffness. (More studies need to be conducted for concrete evidence)

Immune System Strengthening:  Tart cherry juice is rich in vitamins and minerals! Researchers believe tart cherries high antioxidant content may help prevent infections.

The potential benefits of tart cherry juice are still early on in research.

The group that did see benefits followed the guideline of two daily 8-ounce (240-ml) doses of the juice.

This is believed to be the equivalent of consuming around 200 tart cherries each day.

Tart cherry juice powder, studies using powdered supplements typically used around 480 mg per day.  It is reported the Tart cherry benefits were mostly observed following 7–10 days of supplementing.

*******Tart cherry juice also contains quercetin, a plant compound that may interact with certain medications, particularly blood thinners. Individuals on medications should consult a doctor before adding large amounts of tart cherry juice to their diet.
